Lake Shikotsu

Lake Shikotsu

This is a caldera lake and it is shaped like an eyebrow.

It's situated at a height of 250m above sea level, with a 40km shore,a depth of 363m(the 2nd deepest in Japan), a transparency of 17.5m(the 3rd cleanest in Japan) and famous as the northernmost ice-freelake of Japan.

Its mysterious blue surface reflects the successive seasonalbeauty throughout the year. You can enjoy fishing red salmon around June, hot springs, camping, scuba-diving, and boating excursions there.

This is a small lake with a 5km shoreline and is known as the one of the most mysterious 3 lakes in Hokkaido.

It's in Shikotsu-Toya National Park.

You can't see any artificial structures there except an observatory.

Moss-Covered Cave

Moss-Covered Cave

This is the eroded lava crack crave, which was formed by the eruption of Mt.Tarumae.

The topography like a corridor is about 10m high, and about 420m long.

The sides of the walls are covered with about 30 kinds of moss.

It looks like a cloak of green velvet, and is an asset for academic pursuits.

You'll see the stepped terrain and water tumbling down from a height of 50m. The refreshing sight is reminiscent of beautiful white threads of silk.

Chitose River

This clean river flows from Lake Shikotu, through the urban area, then into the Sea of Japan. Salmon comes back in fall, and swans take a rest in winter there.

Bibi River & Lake Chitose

There's a natural park area between CIST main campus and the Graduate School, where the headwaters of Bibi River shoot out from under the earth and run into Lake Utonai.

You can see the still stream in the forest from over the Bridge of Inspiration. You can see white skunk cabbage flowers in spring, people canoeing at the lower river region in summer, the shining mirrored reflections of the autumn leaves changing color and migratory birds resting in winter.

Lake Chitose is a tranquil lake surrounded by dense forest.

It's not so near but you can go there from the campus on foot.

Chitose Salmon Aquarium / Indian Fish-Wheel

This is the largest aquarium specializing in freshwater fish in Japan.

You can enjoy learning about salmon and see the riverbed of River Chitose from its underwater observatory, and in Fall, you can see salmon ascending vigorously against the stream. The Indian Fish-Wheel, an automatic salmon capturing machinehas been famous as an Autumn feature for more than one century.
