Centennial Anniversary Ceremony of National Ilan University (Yilan City, Taiwan)

On Tuesday, May 5 and Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the Centennial Anniversary Ceremony of National Ilan University (NIU) was held. From our university, President Yoshikazu Miyanaga and Vice President Masatoshi Suzuki attended the event. National Ilan University was originally established in 1926 as the Taipei Prefectural Ilan School of Agriculture and Forestry, and became a national university in 2003. Although the university began in the field of agriculture, it currently consists of four colleges: the College of Bioresources, the College of Engineering, the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and the College of Human Ecology, comprising 15 departments and 18 master’s programs. The university also operates a Language Center, Continuing Education Center, and Physical Education Center. NIU is internationally oriented and actively welcomes many international students from around the world.

On May 5, a Centennial Reception for overseas guests was held. University representatives, including presidents and vice presidents, attended from Japan as well as from various countries in Europe and Southeast Asia. During the reception, commemorative gifts were presented by each participating university to President Wei-Jung Chen of National Ilan University.

On May 6, the official Centennial Anniversary Ceremony was held. In addition to representatives from overseas universities, representatives from universities across Taiwan and government agencies were invited, making it a large-scale commemorative event. At the beginning of the ceremony, a concert was performed by the NIU Student Orchestra, followed by presentations on the university’s 100-year history, an address by the university president, and congratulatory remarks from representatives of various organizations. In the latter half of the ceremony, a birthday cake celebrating the university’s 100th anniversary was brought in, and President Chen blowing out the candles was a particularly memorable moment.

Also on May 6, under the guidance of Professor Chang-Tang Chang of the Department of Environmental Engineering, Environmental Education Center, the delegation visited the university’s Historical Museum. The museum had been newly opened in conjunction with the centennial celebrations, and visitors were able to view valuable materials related to the university’s early history, including its cooperation with Japan at the time of its establishment.
