Courtesy Visit to National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), Hsinchu, Taiwan

On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, President Yoshikazu Miyanaga and Vice President Masatoshi Suzuki paid a courtesy visit to National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
 

National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) is one of Taiwan’s leading national comprehensive research universities. Originally founded in Beijing in 1911, the university was re-established in Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 1956. NTHU has nine colleges and is internationally recognized for its excellence in science and engineering, semiconductor technology, and information science. The university has more than 15,000 students and approximately 1,600 faculty members, including around 900 full-time faculty members.
 

The first meeting was held in the President’s Reception Room and was attended by Professor Ta-Jen Yen, Senior Vice President; Professor Hsiang-Yu Wang, Associate Vice President for Global Affairs; Professor Chang-Hong Shen, Chair of the Department of Semiconductor Process Development; and Dr. Yu-Hua Huang, Director of Human Resource Development at the Tze-Chiang Foundation of Science and Technology (TCFST).
 

The meeting began with an overview of the Chitose Institute of Science and Technology (CIST), followed by a presentation introducing NTHU. Dr. Huang also introduced semiconductor human resource development programs offered by TCFST. The NTHU representatives encouraged CIST students to participate in NTHU’s international student programs as well as TCFST’s semiconductor human resource development programs conducted in English. The visit highlighted the importance of establishing a framework that would enable CIST students to participate in these outstanding educational programs in the near future.
 

NTHU and TCFST are located in the Hsinchu Science Park, a major hub of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and home to the research and development headquarters of leading companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC). During the meeting, the participants exchanged information on various programs and practical training opportunities for developing human resources in next-generation semiconductor technologies. They also discussed opportunities for faculty and researcher exchanges between universities and industry to foster highly skilled professionals.
 

Following the meeting, Professor Kai-Ming Feng of the Department of Electrical Engineering guided the CIST delegation to the department’s conference room. There, the delegation also met with Professor Ming-Chang M. Lee. The professors provided overviews of the Institutes of Photonics and Communication Engineering with which they are affiliated, as well as introductions to their current research projects. Professor Feng subsequently gave the delegation a tour of his laboratory.
 

Through discussions with postdoctoral researchers in the laboratory, the delegation gained a strong impression of the active research environment at NTHU, including their work on academic publications and presentations at international conferences. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to deepen mutual understanding and explore possibilities for future academic and research collaboration between CIST and NTHU.
